Thanks for your thoughts on Civolution. We are up to 17 plays and get through two player games in 70 minutes and our first four player game was 130 minutes. That’s okay for us. I shouldn’t like it as a long time Knizian but I actually adore it. I don’t quite know why. Also, a game is four eras, but I think you mentioned three … is there a shorter version?

Thanks, no, the 3 era thing was just a typo. I’ll see if I can fix it.

I think two hours or so for 4 players would be fine, but in my groups (which aren’t fast but I also don’t think of as particularly slow) I think we’d be looking at more like 4 and that would be rough. I think if you could do 3 players in the neighborhood of 90min it would be ok but I just can’t see us getting there.

Mu is likely my favorite trick taking game. The old Tandem crowd (Jeff, Chris, etc) now play regularly via BGa (it’s in a pretty big free beta mode now) to get our fix in.

Thanks Chris for talking me out of trying to set up a game of Civolution at the next Games Day. 🙂

I traded for a copy of Civolution. I read the startup guide, then I read most of the rulebook, then I looked at the appendix. I realized there were about 60 pages of content here. I decided there was too much going on and ended up selling the game at Dice Tower West Con.

I am a big fan of Stefan Feld. I think castles of burgundy might be my favorite game of all time. If you play with someone new to the game or players prone to analysis paralysis, the game will bog down considerably and could end up taking three hours. But with competent players who are familiar with the game, you should expect the game to take about an hour.

I was frustrated, I really wanted to go to Dice Tower West this year but things got too chaotic and I didn’t get it organized. Sorry to have missed you there! I really hope I can make it next year.

I actually learned Civolution from a YouTube explainer, a first for me. It was on Meeple University, much easier than tackling the rules - and I usually prefer to read.
